چکیده

During laparoscopic surgeries, changing forceps is a relatively simple procedure that requires a nurse or another surgeon; however, most hospitals lack a scrub nurse in the operating room. Therefore, we have developed an assisting robot for laparoscopic surgery that is able to pass or receive forceps under the voice control of the surgeon. This robot system consists of a magazine that holds all forceps to be used in one operation and a robot arm that passes or receives forceps between the magazine and surgeon. These two components are located side by side and have a linear actuator for height adjustment. A bar code is attached to the forceps to identify the forceps. This system utilizes speech recognition software and can select the forceps requested by the surgeon. After the robot hand grasps the forceps from the magazine, the arm and the wrist turn to hand the forceps to the surgeon. When the surgeon lays the used forceps on the return holder, the robot returns the forceps to the magazine in a similar motion as when passing the forceps to the surgeon. This robot can, thus, compensate for the shortage of scrub nurses required for surgery. © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden and The Robotics Society of Japan, 2008

Detecting and Analyzing the Surgical Workflow to Aid Human and Robotic Scrub Nurses

Every surgeon and nurse involved in surgery builds a mental model of each type of surgery based on their experiences. This implicit knowledge about the surgical workflow allows them to make decisions based on the current context and predict and prepare future steps. Acquiring this model takes time, therefore experienced scrub nurses are in high demand. Additionally to that, qualified scrub nurs...

Future trends in the design and application of surgical robots.

Beyond current laparoscopic surgery is the emergence of robotic surgery. The power of this type of surgery is converting both vision and hand motions into electronic signals (video and telemanipulation), which completes the transition of surgery from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. Other advances include replacing scrub and circulation nurses with robots, miniaturization, biosurgery,...

A New Algorithm for the Visual Tracking of Surgical Instruments in Robot - assisted Laparoscopic Surgery

We proposed a novel algorithm for instrument segmentation in the robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) images, which will be used for tool tracking to automatically preventing hazardous situations. The proposed algorithm achieved 1mm range of average RMSE of tool tip position in various conditions, which is significantly lower value compared to the previous methods.
